The PA Chapter is involved in various special projects. Often these projects relate to national campaigns or member special interests that impact the health and safety of children. Some of the current special projects are: Infant Safe Sleep Initiative, Developmental Screening, and Improving Health for Children in Foster Care.

Infant Safe Sleep Initiative

Infants are dying in unsafe sleep conditions. While the Back to Sleep campaign has made a significant improvement in Sudden Unexplained Infant deaths, there is still grave concern that parents are unaware of the dangers of co-sleeping, bedding and other environmental issues. Through PAAAP work with the PA Child Death Review and increasing nationwide awareness due to other state CDR programs, the PA AAP has engaged with the PA Academy of Family Physicians and PA Section of ACOG to encourage more patient education on this topic (see link to letter below).

Through the efforts of Dr. Eileen Tyrala, SIDS of Pennsylvania (Cribs for Kids Program) and Representative Larry Curry, House Bill 47 has been introduced in this legislative session to more effectively educate new parents about infant safe sleep.

Check the links below for more information regarding safe sleep.
