President's Message, March 2024
Mary Ann Rigas, MD, FAAP
Dear fellow PA AAP members,
Thank you so much to everyone who presented at or attended our annual CME Conference in Pittsburgh last weekend. It was wonderful to share a weekend full of learning, reuniting with old friends, and forging new relationships.
As I listened to our amazing slate of speakers, I noticed a theme emerging as one after another urged us to consider the needs of our most vulnerable patients and commit ourselves to reducing the health and healthcare disparities they face. Dr. Maya Ragavan informed us that children of non-English speaking parents are more likely to experience communication-related adverse events and medical errors. She suggested that the responsibility of providing linguistically equitable services should be shifted from the patient to the healthcare system and that we should provide language services at and throughout all healthcare visits, from start to finish.
In April 2020, when Dr. Ala Stanford learned that African Americans accounted for more than a third of Covid fatalities in Philadelphia and that positive Covid tests were higher in poorer neighborhoods despite six times more testing in higher-income neighborhoods, she founded the Black Doctors Consortium which set out to take Covid 19 testing into their own hands.
