President's Message, May 2024
Mary Ann Rigas, MD, FAAP
Hello fellow PA AAP members!
It’s that time of year again – advocacy time! Last month, fifteen Pennsylvania pediatricians participated in our national AAP Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C. For the second year in a row, we advocated with our legislators to put in place developmentally appropriate protections for children and teens online by passing two bipartisan bills, the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) and the Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act 2.0. (COPPA 2.0). We also asked them to reauthorize the Emergency Medical Services Act for Children (EMSC), the only federal program dedicated to improving the emergency care continuum for children.
This month, nineteen PA AAP members traveled to Harrisburg, where we met with our State Senators and Representatives to advocate for paid family leave, continuation of telemedicine services, and banning of noncompete clauses for physicians. It was interesting and enlightening to discuss these issues with our legislators and their staff; while many were 100% on board with our goals, others provided contrasting perspectives and priorities.
